Google confidently announced last week that it will completely shut down the standard Analytics, also known as Universal Analytics in Google Analytics, after July 1, 2023, as part of their ongoing efforts to improve their services.
Rest assured that despite the decision to close the account, we will still have access to our historical data, albeit in a read-only form. Furthermore, it is important to note that starting July 1, 2023, data collection will be transitioned from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4 (GA4), pronounced as "ci-ey-for". This change will not affect the integrity of our data and will provide us with more advanced data collection capabilities.
First and foremost, I am confident that the decision to transition to GA4 was the correct one. While Universal Analytics allowed for straightforward analysis and reporting, its limitations on segmentation caused disruptions in data flow for event setups and tracking. GA4's event-based analysis and segmentation of all breakdowns has elevated reporting to a more professional level. Although the interface may present some challenges for users, ongoing improvements are being made daily. Rest assured that within a year, GA4 will undoubtedly emerge as an even more powerful and indispensable tool.
It is my professional opinion that not all marketing professionals should rush to install GA4. However, it is crucial to make sure that all events are functioning correctly. Installing GA4 after July 1, 2022, especially for e-commerce websites, may cause annual data comparison issues. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you install GA4 on all your sites and mobile applications before July 1, 2022, and verify that the data flows are accurate. This way, you will be able to make annual comparisons with confidence.
Attending GA4 trainings can significantly improve your understanding of segmentation and event-based analysis measurement setups and strategies, in addition to providing access to informative panels.
