What is MBS Messenger-based Sales?

MBS, or Messenger-based Sales in Turkish, is a globally popular method for online sales and is one of the most frequently used sales methods in Turkey. It involves selling products or services through messaging platforms.

This article will provide tips on how to improve and organize online message-based sales.

When it comes to e-commerce, our minds naturally jump to the buying and selling process on a website. However, e-commerce is a constantly evolving concept that expands with technological development and needs, covering many different dimensions. With this in mind, it's safe to say that in five years, e-commerce will have evolved into a new dimension altogether, leaving behind what we know today.

What Are Online Sales Methods?

Here are the e-commerce methods that I can currently think of:

  • Online direct selling through your website
  • Online direct sales via Mobile App
  • Sales through the online store
  • Sales by message

There are many other technologies that could be added to this list. However, in five years, we can expect to see many new technologies on this list.

For example, one of the unusual ordering methods for US buyers is to place an order with voice commands. Although this method is not yet used in Turkey, it is expected to be adopted in the future. In America, for instance, you can order pizza by simply saying "Hi Alexa, please order a pizza" to Amazon's Alexa device. This requires no touching of keys, entering of passwords, or inputting of card information. The pizza will be delivered to your home address as long as you say these magic words out loud.

If we were to use this in Turkey, it is likely that Getir and Yemeksepeti would compete to integrate with Amazon Alexa, unless of course, there is another Turkish company that allows for voice command ordering.

Let's now turn to the sales side, using messaging on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, which is the most widely used method in Turkey.

Did you know that almost every small and medium-sized enterprise in Turkey sells and exports using social media advertisements? This method is especially important for selling products abroad.

If Turkey were to ban social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram, Turkish exporting companies would experience a significant problem, as the majority of their sales are made through social media ads.

If you are selling through messaging, I highly recommend utilizing a CRM tool. "CRM" stands for Customer Relationship Management and it refers to strategies, technologies, and practices used to manage and analyze customer interactions and data throughout the customer lifecycle.

With a CRM, you can manage all of your conversations from a single platform, segment those conversations, and accelerate your sales process with automatic rules.

To better illustrate the event, let's take a real example of our customer "Eylül Alyans". This customer engages in a lot of conversations on Instagram (@eylulalyans) and WhatsApp. Additionally, they also sell products on their website eylulalyans.com. However, since the rate of purchases made through Instagram messaging is high, we installed amoCRM to manage this channel and significantly increased sales by improving the pipeline stages.

Currently, all conversations made over WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and the website are stored on amoCRM. They can be segmented and analyzed individually.

For instance, we can easily access statistics such as the number of conversations we had on WhatsApp, Instagram, or Facebook on a weekly, daily, or monthly basis, and how many of these conversations resulted in sales.

While these tasks were being completed, we also developed several automation techniques. For instance, when a customer appears undecided and unsure about purchasing a product after discussing it on Instagram, we send an automated reminder email to them two days later. This has resulted in a positive increase in the conversion rate.
