Overview of E-commerce and E-export in Turkey
According to the Ministry of Commerce's E-commerce Information System (ETBİS) data; e-commerce volume, which was 136 billion TL in 2019, reached 226 billion lira in 2020 and 381.5 billion lira in 2021. In 2022, Turkey's e-commerce volume increased by 109 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 800 billion TL.
According to Euromonitor estimates, Turkey's e-commerce volume is expected to reach 2.3 times its current size by 2025 with a 23.7 percent annual compound growth rate between 2020-2025. Similarly, the global annual compound growth rate is estimated to be 11.7 percent.
According to ETBİS data, the number of businesses engaged in e-commerce increased by 701 percent between 2019 and 2022. During the 3-year period between 2019-2021, the number of orders placed over the internet increased by 252 percent, and this growth rate continued in 2021.
According to Euromonitor data, global cross-border e-commerce retail value was 1.4 trillion dollars in 2017 and reached 3.5 trillion dollars in 2022.
According to ETBİS data, the share of domestic spending was 92 percent in 2021 and decreased to 91.3 percent in 2022, while spending by other countries from Turkey's e-commerce sites increased from 4 percent to 4.2 percent. Additionally, purchases from abroad increased from 4 percent to 4.5 percent.
